This morning a series of deliveries was made. Unfortunately the first of these was a very large and heavy fridge. First, the box wouldn’t fit through the front door, so the delivery men finally took it out and then it just about fit. Then, even removed from the box it wouldn’t fit through the kitchen door, so they left it in the corridor, saying that the technicians would remove the door and take it inside.
So there was a very large and very nice fridge in the corridor, making it impossible to go back and forth.
The delivery men pushed the fridge beyond the kitchen door, dropped off the oven, hob and hood, and left.
Then another delivery arrived: the washing machine and the dryer, along with the air conditioner. Of course these couldn’t squeeze past the fridge in the corridor so the GF devised a sort of tetrisy arrangement, whereby the items were carried into a bedroom and the fridge slid back and forth like those old handheld tile games.
The washing machine and dryer were installed and are working. It took some heaving to get them in place but they are now there.
The air conditioner was not installed.
Then the dishwasher arrived.
Then the technicians arrived. They hooked up the oven, and we have an oven. They hooked up the dishwasher and we have a dishwasher, but one without a front. They didn’t hook up the hob as the gas pipe was too short. They didn’t hook up the hood because the electrical connection wasn’t right. And they took off the fridge door to move in the fridge, but it was still about a milimetre too wide.
I wanted to lie down on my face in rageful mourning, but then luckily it was dark and we turned on the lights and they are looking very good indeed.
We came back to the flat and had a rather annoyed exchange with the architect who insisted that on her drawing the door was wide enough.
We also learned that our Airbnb had been booked by someone else so we had to find a new place in a big hurry as there is no way we can move in before the end of the week.
Meanwhile, the fridge still stands in the corridor, looming like the demonic rabbit in Donnie Darko.
